Jack Adams
 |
Two week post-surgical visit |
A 6 year old castrated male West Highland white terrier presented for 2 days of continuous vomiting. X-rays and an upper GI barium study revealed an obstruction pattern consistent with a gastrointestinal foreign body.
Jack was treated with intravenous fluids to correct his dehydrated state and started on antibiotics and pain medications. When taken to surgery, a peach pit was found lodged in his small intestine. The object was removed successfully and Jack was released from the hospital the next evening.
Common intestinal foreign body include peach pits, corn cobs, pork and steak bones, rocks, socks and string foreign bodies. Make sure your pets do not have access to these, as they don’t pass through their intestinal tracts easily and will often obstruct, requiring surgical removal.
