"Gracie" Dobson

Four month visit |
"Gracie" Dobson is a six year old spayed female mixed breed dog. She developed progressive ulcerations of her nose and face over a three month period. Her owners tried various over-the counter ointments and cold compresses to no avail. Her initial treatment was a two week trial of Keflex, a skin antibiotic, and there was no improvement. After performing a skin biopsy, the pathology revealed pemphigus erythematosus. Immunosuppressive doses of prednisone and imuran were instituted and at her three week check up, Gracie's skin was starting to improve. The medications were then tapered to very low doses, and after four months, her skin was completely normal.
Pemphigus erythematosus is an uncommon autoimmune disease affecting the skin and mucus membranes. The body's own immune system attacks the skin cells as if they were foreign. Autoimmune diseases can often be controlled with appropriate medications but usually require lifelong medicating. Lupus is one of the more well-known autoimmune diseases that affects animals and people.
